[short movie] The Colors of Mathematics – Fractals Show

kaleidoscope-tube-modified

When I was a child, one of my friends had a kaleidoscope. I was hooked from the first time I looked through it. At that time, it never occurred to me that light could create such beautiful bursts of color and so many one of a kind geometric arrangements just by passing through a tube made of cardboard inside of which you could hear the rattling of small objects such as: pieces of glass, sand, and small rocks. It was a true combination of mathematics and art. Photo: Public Domain (Wikimedia Commons)

Later on, I learned about “fractals”. They are geometric shapes that offer the illusion of a never ending show of colors and patterns. Nowadays, you can create beautiful fractals with kaleidoscope software, for example. I watched some fractals shows online but I lost focus because the abundance of color changes tired my eyes after a while. I did not create the fractals in my movie. I found that pictures of various fractals can also offer a nice arrangement that is pleasant to the eye. I hope you will like it, too!
